Steam-dried vs flame-dried fish meal: which grade does your formulation need?
Drying method changes digestibility, TVN and price. A practical guide to choosing between steam-dried and flame-dried fish meal.
Both grades start from the same raw material, but the drying process determines how much of the protein remains highly digestible.
Steam-dried (indirect)
Lower drying temperature preserves lysine and reduces biogenic amines. Pepsin digestibility typically exceeds 90%. Best for shrimp, marine fish and starter diets.
Flame-dried (direct)
Faster and cheaper, but the higher heat can scorch protein. Still an economical option for poultry finisher and ruminant feeds where cost per unit of protein matters most.
Rule of thumb
If your inclusion rate is above 10% or you are feeding early life stages, choose steam-dried. Otherwise flame-dried 55–60% can deliver excellent value.
